Roblox Murder Mystery Maker: Roles and Rounds
How hidden-role rounds work, how to describe roles, clues and a map with places to hide, and how to test a round with several players in Roblox Studio.
A Roblox murder mystery is a social deduction game played in short rounds. When a round starts, the server secretly makes one player the Murderer and one the Sheriff; everyone else is Innocent. The Murderer tries to tag everyone out, the Innocents hide and survive, and the Sheriff tries to work out who the Murderer is. To make one with PromptBlox, write down who gets which role, how a round ends and what the map looks like. A hidden-role game only shows its problems when several people play at once, so the real check is a round in Roblox Studio with three or four test players. Each problem you find there becomes a chat message asking for a fix.
The same structure fits other hidden-role games, like a thief among museum visitors: a secret, a timer and a map with room to hide.
How a round works
Players keep playing because they cannot be sure who holds each role. They watch how others move, bluff and sometimes guess wrong, and roles are dealt again every round.
| Role | Goal | Usual tools |
|---|---|---|
| Murderer | Tag out every Innocent before the timer ends, without being caught | A close-range tag tool |
| Sheriff | Find and catch the Murderer | One ranged tool; many games take the role away if the Sheriff catches an Innocent |
| Innocent | Survive until the timer ends or the Murderer is caught | Hiding spots, clues and sometimes the Sheriff's dropped tool |
Lobby
Players wait until there are enough of them, with a short countdown so late joiners are included.
Secret roles
The server picks roles at random and shows each player only their own.
Grace period
Tag tools stay inactive for a few seconds while everyone spreads out.
Play
The Murderer hunts, Innocents hide and look for clues, the Sheriff watches. Tagged-out players spectate.
Round end
The Murderer is caught, every Innocent is out or the timer runs out. A results screen reveals every role.
Maps that make deduction possible
The map decides whether a round is tense or dull. Size it for your player count and ask for these by name:
- Hiding spots: wardrobes, curtains, the space under a staircase. Enough to hide in, not so many that nobody can be found.
- Second exits: rooms with two doors let a chased player escape. Dead ends make every chase end the same way.
- Landmarks: a clock tower or a kitchen gives players names for places when they tell each other what they saw.
- Clues: fading footprints, a door left open, a light that flickers where someone was just tagged out. Clues give the Sheriff something better than a guess.
Describe your mystery in PromptBlox
In Create, give the roles, how they are chosen, what each can do, how a round ends, the timer and the map. While the build runs, the workspace shows the scene taking shape, and you can send notes. If you remember that the attic needs a second way in, send “the attic needs a second staircase” then.
“Build a murder mystery game in a two-floor mansion during a storm. Rounds need at least three players. At the start of each round, secretly choose one Murderer and one Sheriff; everyone else is Innocent, and each player sees only their own role. Give the Murderer a close-range tag tool and the Sheriff a ranged tag tool with a short reload. If the Sheriff tags an Innocent, the Sheriff is out too. Innocents win if the Murderer is caught or the three-minute timer runs out. Tagged-out players spectate. Add hiding spots in wardrobes and behind curtains, a library with two exits and coins to collect. After each round, show everyone's role and return to the lobby.”
Museum heist
“Make a hidden-role game in a museum at night. One player is secretly the Thief, who must steal three marked artifacts without being seen. One player is the Guard, whose flashlight freezes the Thief when held on them for two seconds. Everyone else is a Visitor who can ring an alarm bell once per round. The Thief wins by escaping with all three artifacts; everyone else wins by freezing the Thief or lasting until the timer ends.”
Space station saboteur
“Create a social deduction game on a space station. One crew member is secretly a Saboteur who can break machines while the crew repairs them to fill a progress bar. Any player can call a meeting at the central table, where everyone votes on who to send away in the escape pod. The crew wins by filling the bar or voting out the Saboteur.”
Refine rounds and roles
Report what happened in a round and what should have happened instead:
- “Innocents can see a red outline around the Murderer. Remove anything that shows another player's role until the round ends.”
- “The Murderer caught someone as the round started. Add a ten-second grace period before any tag tool works.”
- “Rounds on this map end too fast. Raise the timer to four minutes and add two hiding spots upstairs.”
- “The same player was the Murderer three rounds in a row. Make the last Murderer less likely to get the role again.”
Design tips and common mistakes
- Role leaks. Anything that looks, sounds or behaves differently for one role gives it away. Leaks are easy to miss when you only test from one player's view.
- Balance that ignores player count. One Murderer against fifteen players is a different game from one against four. Some games add a second Sheriff on full servers.
- Everyone spawning together. Spread spawn points out, or the first seconds decide the round.
- Nothing to do after being tagged out. Spectating and short rounds keep players from leaving.
- A Sheriff who is too strong. When the ranged tool has no cost for a wrong guess, rounds stop being about deduction.
Test rounds with several players in Roblox Studio
A hidden-role game cannot be tested alone. Open the exported .rbxlx file in Roblox Studio on Windows or Mac, then pick a local server with three or four players in Studio's testing modes. Each player gets a separate window, so you can check that every window shows only that player's role.
Play every ending, including the Sheriff catching an Innocent. Leave as the Murderer mid-round and check that the round still ends, then run several rounds in a row to check that roles are picked again. Changes use your usage allowance, so keep an eye on your plan. When rounds end correctly several times in a row, move on to publishing the place on Roblox. PromptBlox is for creators 13 and older.
Frequently asked questions
What is a murder mystery game on Roblox?
It is a round-based hidden-role game. Each round, one player is secretly the Murderer, one is the Sheriff and the rest are Innocents who hide and survive. Nobody knows anyone else's role until the round ends.
Can I make a less violent version?
Yes. Any theme with a secret role and a way to catch it works: a thief among museum visitors, a saboteur on a ship, a tagger in hide and seek. Replace tagging out with freezing or catching, and keep the effects light.
How long should a round be?
Long enough for the Murderer to find people and for clues to matter, short enough that players who are out early are not waiting long. It depends on map size and player count, so time several test rounds and adjust the timer.
How many players does a murder mystery need?
Three is the smallest group where the roles work: one Murderer, one Sheriff and one Innocent. Most games wait for more, since several suspects make it more interesting. Ask for a lobby that waits for a minimum player count.
How do I keep roles secret?
Ask for roles to be picked on the server and sent only to the player who has each one. Then look for leaks when you test: name tag colors, a visible tool, a sound only one role makes or a scoreboard that reveals roles early.
